According to the Gospel of John, Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary from Bethany, was the beloved friend of the Lord. When Lazarus fell ill and died, Christ was far away. He arrived in Bethany four days after the burial, at a time when His friend’s body had already begun to decay ("by this time there is a bad odor").

The moment when the Creator of Life weeps before the tomb of His creation is one of the most moving scenes in Holy Scripture. It reveals Christ's perfect humanity, which feels the pain of death. However, the command "Lazarus, come out!" reveals His perfect Divinity.
