Saint Chryse the New Martyr (October 13): The Matchless Beauty of Faith and the Power of Confession
Historical Context and the Saint’s Sacrifice
Today, October 13, our Holy Church commemorates Saint Chryse (Zlata) the New Martyr, one of the most radiant and moving figures of the New Martyrology. Saint Chryse lived in the late 18th century in the village of Slatena (today Chrysi) in the Almopia region of Macedonia, Greece, during a time when Christians suffered under Ottoman rule.
She was distinguished not only for her physical beauty but above all for her purity of soul, humility, and fervent faith in Christ. Her physical beauty became the occasion for her great trial: a young Ottoman was captivated by her, abducted her, and promised to make her his wife, offering her wealth, honors, and social prestige, on the sole condition that she renounce her Orthodox Christian faith and convert to Islam.
Unshakable Confession and Spiritual Firmness
Saint Chryse firmly rejected every alluring proposal, declaring with boldness:
“I believe in my Lord Jesus Christ and Him alone do I worship; I will never deny Him, even if you subject me to a thousand deaths.”
Seeing her steadfast resolve, her persecutors resorted to a cruel tactic: they brought her own parents and sisters before her, forcing them under threat of death to persuade her to yield. With tears in their eyes, her family pleaded with her to outwardly deny Christ just to save her life and protect them from retaliation.
At that moment, the Saint’s inner spiritual greatness shone forth. Transcending natural blood ties for the sake of Eternal Truth, she answered with words reminiscent of the early Christian martyrs:
“Since you urge me to deny the true God, you are no longer my parents or sisters. My Father is the Lord Jesus Christ, my mother is the Theotokos, and my brothers and sisters are all the Saints of the Church.”
Severely brutal tortures followed for days. She was beaten with rods, strips of skin were cut from her body, and finally she surrendered her holy soul on October 13, 1795, receiving the unfading crown of martyrdom.
Patristic Interpretation: Gold Refined in the Fire
The New Martyrs, such as Saint Chryse, hold a prominent position in Patristic tradition.Saint Nicodemus the Athonite, who compiled the New Martyrology, emphasized that the New Martyrs served as pillars that kept the faith alive during centuries of bondage.
The Testing of Faith: According to Holy Scripture, a Christian's faith is tested “like gold refined in the fire” (1 Peter 1:7). Saint Chryse fully lived up to her name (Chryse meaning "Golden"): her soul proved to be pure gold, as neither worldly riches nor the fear of suffering could corrupt it.
Victory Over Weakness: Saint John Chrysostom notes that God's power is perfected in human weakness. A young, simple maiden managed to overcome the might of an earthly empire, proving that divine love for Christ surpasses all human fear.
Relevance to Modern Life
In a modern world dominated by compromise, materialism, and superficiality, Saint Chryse offers us essential spiritual lessons:
Resisting Modern Compromises: While we may not face physical martyrdom today, we are called daily to confess our faith in the face of moral and spiritual compromises.
Prioritizing Inner Beauty: External beauty is temporary, whereas spiritual beauty and purity of heart endure eternally.
Steadfastness in Values: The Saint teaches us to remain firm in our spiritual principles, even when those around us or societal pressure encourage us to abandon them.
