When the time came for the Matins (Orthros) service, the two monks began to chant together. Upon reaching the 9th Ode of the Canon in front of the icon of the Virgin Mary, the disciple chanted the traditional hymn: "More honorable than the Cherubim..." (Τὴν Τιμιωτέραν τῶν Χερουβὶμ).

At that moment, the stranger gently interrupted him and said, "In our land, we do not chant it this way. Before 'More honorable,' we add another hymn, which goes like this:

"Axion estin os alithos makarizin se tin Theotokon, tin aimakariston kai panamomiton kai mitera tou Theou imon."
(It is truly meet to bless thee, O Theotokos, the ever-blessed and entirely blameless, and the Mother of our God.)

The moment the stranger chanted these words, the icon of the Virgin Mary flashed with an unoriginated, heavenly light. The young disciple felt his soul overflow with an inexpressible spiritual fragrance and deep devotion.

3. Engraved Upon the Stone Tablet

Astonished and moved to tears, the disciple begged the foreign monk to write down the words so he would not forget them. However, since there was no paper or ink in the cell, the stranger took a stone slab and, by a striking miracle, carved the words directly into the stone with his bare finger, as if the slab were made of soft clay!

Immediately after, the stranger vanished. When the Elder returned, the disciple recounted the event and showed him the engraved stone tablet. The fathers of Mount Athos instantly understood that the "stranger" was none other than the Archangel Gabriel.The stone slab was sent to the Patriarch in Constantinople as proof of the miracle, while the miraculous icon was transferred with high honors to the Protaton Church.
