Holy Week begins with a profound invitation: to look within. The first two days are dedicated to the "Bridegroom" (Nymphios) of the Church, Christ, who comes in the middle of the night to ask our souls not for words, but for fruit and light.

Holy Monday: The Test of Sincerity

On the first day, the Church presents us with two contrasting images: a tree that disappointed and a man who triumphed through suffering.

The Cursed Fig Tree: A Lesson in Spiritual Fruitfulness
Imagine Christ walking towards Jerusalem in the morning. He feels hunger and sees from afar a fig tree covered in lush, green leaves. He approaches, hoping to find fruit, but the tree, despite its impressive appearance, is empty. Then, the Lord says: "Let no fruit grow on you ever again." And the fig tree withered away immediately.

Why such severity? Christ is not punishing a plant; He is using a living example. The fig tree symbolizes hypocrisy. The person who has "leaves" (external piety, regular church attendance, beautiful words) but lacks "fruit" (deeds of love, charity, and essential inner change).

The Moral Lesson: God does not look for the "greenery" of appearance, but for the substance of the heart. Faith without works is spiritually dead.

Joseph the All-Comely: The Prophet of Patience
Joseph, the youngest and beloved son of the Patriarch Jacob, is called "All-Comely" (Pankalos) for the beauty of his soul. His story is the ultimate prefiguration of Christ.

The Betrayal: His brothers, out of jealousy, threw him into a pit and sold him into slavery for 20 pieces of silver.

The Ordeal: In Egypt, he was unjustly imprisoned for years, refusing to give in to temptation and maintaining his faith despite the hardships.

The Glory: Eventually, God exalted him to become the Vice-Regent of Egypt. Instead of seeking revenge, he saved the people from famine and forgave his brothers.

The Moral Lesson: Just as Joseph was betrayed, buried in a pit, and eventually glorified to save the world, so Christ walks toward the Tomb to grant us eternal life.

Holy Tuesday: The Light of Vigilance

On the second day, the atmosphere becomes even more solemn. The Church calls us to "wake up" spiritually through two powerful stories.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins: "Behold, the Bridegroom Comes"
Ten maidens await the Nymphios (Christ) to arrive in the middle of the night.

The five "Wise" virgins took extra oil for their lamps.

The five "Foolish" virgins only brought what was burning at that moment.

The Nymphios was delayed, and they all fell asleep. When the cry rang out, "Behold, the Nymphios (Bridegroom) comes!", the foolish virgins saw their lamps flickering out. By the time they found oil and returned, the door to the wedding feast was closed.

The Moral Lesson: The "oil" symbolizes almsgiving and love. Our faith cannot wait until the last minute. We must be in a state of constant readiness (v vigilance), for we do not know when we will be called to meet the Lord.

The Hymn of Kassiani: The Power of Repentance
On Holy Tuesday evening, the churches are filled with the melody of the poem by the nun Kassiani. It describes a sinful woman who, with tears in her eyes, washes Christ's feet and dries them with her hair, offering expensive myrrh.

The Contrast: While Judas (the disciple) prepares the betrayal for money, a "harlot" (the stranger) offers her entire fortune and her deep repentance for salvation.

The Moral Lesson: There is no sin, however great, that cannot be forgiven by the ocean of God's mercy, provided there is sincere repentance.
