With deep devotion and spiritual joy, our Holy Orthodox Church honors the memory of one of the most beloved, modern, and miraculous Saints of the 20th century: Saint Luke the Surgeon, Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea.

Saint Luke represents a unique, almost unprecedented personality in global church history. He was simultaneously a world-class scientist, professor of anatomy, and surgeon, a global pioneer in the fields of local anesthesia and purulent surgery. At the same time, he was a fiery pastor, an unyielding confessor of the faith, and a spiritual father to thousands of persecuted people. In an era where science and faith are often artificially presented as rivals, the life of Saint Luke brilliantly proves that true knowledge and deep faith can coexist in the same heart, illuminating and complementing one another.

The Extraordinary Life of the Saint: From Operating Rooms to Exile

1. The Scientist Dedicated to Relieving Human Suffering

Born Valentin Felixovich Voino-Yasenetsky in 1877 in Kerch, Crimea, he possessed a rare talent for painting and could have pursued a brilliant career in the arts. Instead, he consciously chose to study medicine. His motivation was purely evangelical: he wanted to be useful to poor, ordinary people who were suffering. Working as a surgeon in remote provincial hospitals under abysmal material and technical conditions, he performed thousands of successful surgeries, restored sight to hundreds of blind individuals, and saved countless lives.

2. Priesthood Amid the Darkness of an Atheistic Regime

Following the rise of the Bolshevik regime in Russia and the untimely death of his beloved wife, Valentin heard God’s inner call. During a period of savage, bloody persecutions against the Church, when priests were imprisoned or executed and churches were demolished, he dared the unthinkable: to be ordained a priest and later a Bishop (1923), receiving the name Luke (in honor of the Evangelist Luke, who was also a physician and an artist).

Before every surgery, the Saint would devoutly make the sign of the Cross over the patient, light an oil lamp before the icon of the Virgin Mary in the operating room, and use iodine to paint the sign of the Cross on the patient's body. Despite threats and blackmail from the Soviet authorities, he categorically refused to operate if the icon of the Theotokos was removed from the room.

3. Eleven Years of Imprisonment and Exile in Siberia

His unyielding stance provoked the wrath of the state. He was arrested, brutally tortured using the "sleep deprivation" interrogation method, and exiled three times to the coldest, most inhospitable regions of Siberia, beyond the Arctic Circle. Yet even there, amid freezing temperatures, deprivation, and personal suffering, Saint Luke continued to operate on locals using primitive tools (such as pocketknives or horsehair for sutures) and to preach Christ.

During World War II, he personally requested to offer his services to his homeland, operating day and night on thousands of severely wounded soldiers. His scientific contribution and his monumental textbook, "Essays on the Surgery of Purulent Infections," were so significant that the Soviet state was forced to award him the prestigious Stalin State Prize. The Saint accepted the prize but donated the entire monetary sum to orphanages and war victims.

The Grace and spiritual stature of Saint Luke the Surgeon were instantly recognized by great, modern holy figures of our Church, who saw in him a giant of the faith:

Saint Paisios the Athonite: Elder Paisios held a profound respect for Saint Luke. In his conversations with doctors and scientists who visited his cell, Panagouda, he constantly promoted Saint Luke as the ultimate role model for the scientific world. Saint Paisios emphasized that "a doctor must possess the self-denial of Saint Luke, who did not view surgery as a profession, but as a genuflection and a ministry to Christ Himself." He noted that scientific knowledge, when accompanied by such humility, becomes "sanctified science."

Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalivia: Renowned for his clairvoyant and healing gifts, Saint Porphyrios, who had served for years as a chaplain at the Athens Polyclinic and knew human suffering intimately, spoke with awe about Saint Luke’s spiritual presence in modern hospitals. He characteristically told his spiritual children that "Saint Luke is present over operating tables. He guides the hands of faithful doctors without them realizing it, because he has received a special Grace from God to heal and comfort those undergoing surgery."

Saint Iakovos Tsalikis (of the Monastery of Saint David): Elder Iakovos, who lived in constant communion with the Saints, frequently reminded the faithful that modern Saints, like Luke the Surgeon and Saint Nektarios, possess "great boldness before God and run immediately" wherever there is a need or illness, provided a person invokes them with a clean heart, faith, and no doubt.

Science as a Ministry: He teaches us that knowledge should not lead to arrogance, but to service. For the Saint, every single human being, no matter how poor or marginalized, was a living image of God.

Unshakable Confession: He never bent to state violence, nor did he hide his identity as an Archbishop. He calls us to keep our Orthodox faith alive, regardless of prevailing social or political conditions.

The Light of the Soul: Toward the end of his life, the Saint completely lost his eyesight. Despite his blindness, he continued to serve the Divine Liturgy, preach, and guide thousands of faithful, proving that celestial, spiritual light is infinitely more powerful than the physical eyes of the body.
