He withdrew to Thrace, specifically to the region of Odyssopolis (modern-day Varna, Bulgaria). Julian's fanatical pagan officials arrested him. Instead of respecting his white hair, his long service, and his venerable presence, they displayed unprecedented cruelty. They subjected him to horrific tortures, demanding that he deny Christ and sacrifice to the idols. Saint Dorotheus, filled with a supernatural strength flowing directly from the presence of the Holy Spirit, endured every lashing and torture untouched, confessing his faith with a resounding voice. During these torments, he surrendered his holy soul into the hands of the Living God, receiving the double, unfading crown of a Confessor Hierarch and a Great Martyr.
