Why did this matter? If Christ were merely a creature, then His sacrifice on the Cross would not have the divine power to deify man, and our salvation would remain impossible.

Seeing the growing turmoil, Saint Constantine the Great convened the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea in 325 AD. There, 318 bishops including Saint Nicholas, Saint Spyridon, and Saint Athanasius the Great, refuted the heresy and drafted the first seven articles of the Creed ("I Believe"), declaring that Christ is:

"Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father."

"Did you see bodies adorned with the scars of Christ? These men, who endured tortures for the name of God, could never betray the Truth."

Saint Athanasius the Great, who experienced the events firsthand as a young deacon, later proclaimed with absolute dogmatic certainty:

"The word of the Lord, spoken through the Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, remains forever."
He emphasizes that the decisions of the Fathers were not human inventions, but the voice of Christ Himself.

Saint Gregory Palamas connects this feast with the mystery of Pentecost, explaining that the Fathers became "a pure vessel of the Holy Spirit." Just like the Apostles in the Upper Room, the 318 Saints in Nicaea spoke enlightened by wisdom from above.

Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite reveals a beautiful prefiguration from the Old Testament. Just as the Patriarch Abraham took 318 of his chosen household servants and defeated the foreign kings to liberate Lot (Gen. 14:14), so too God gathered 318 Fathers to vanquish the spiritual enemy (Arius) and liberate the Church from error.
