The Service of the Epitaphios of the Virgin Mary: The Ritual of the Athonite "Summer Pascha"

Today, August 14th, on the eve of the great Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, our Church enters the most devout moment of the summer.

In the consciousness of the Orthodox people, August 15th is rightfully called "the Summer Pascha." At the center of tonight's worship is the Service of the Epitaphios of the Virgin Mary, a deeply moving ritual with profound Athonite and Palestinian roots that revives the mystery of Gethsemane.

1. The Procession of the Svanion & Placement in the Kouvouklion

The ceremony begins during Great Vespers or Matins.

The Liturgical Procession: The Abbot or the presiding Priest, vested in festive white robes, emerges from the Royal Doors holding in his hands the Svanion (the embroidered or carved body of the Theotokos).

The Decoration: The body of the Virgin Mary is placed in the center of the Katholikon, inside the carved wooden Bier (Kouvouklion) decorated earlier by the monks with white lilies, myrtle, and laurel leaves.

Anointing with Myrrh: The presiding priest sprinkles the icon of the Virgin Mary with pure rosewater and incense, while the church resounds with the ringing of the bells.

2. The Lamentations of the Theotokos: The Chanting of the Three Stanzas

The two choirs of monks or chanters stand to the right and left of the Epitaphios. The Lamentations of the Dormition are chanted, divided into three stanzas in the Plagal of the First Tone, imitating the Lamentations of Holy Friday:

First Stanza:
"Life in the tomb, you were laid, O Pure One, and angelic hosts were amazed, glorifying your translation."

Second Stanza:
"It is truly right to magnify You, the Receiver of God, who became the treasury of virtues..."

Third Stanza:
"Every generation offers a hymn to Your Burial, O Virgin..."

During the third stanza, the Priest censes around the Epitaphios and sprinkles the faithful with myrrh, chanting the characteristic: "They sprinkled the tomb with myrrh, O Theotokos, those who buried You...".

3. The Evlogitaria & The Procession of the Epitaphios

After the Lamentations, the Theotokos Blessings (Evlogitaria) are chanted ("Blessed are You, O All-Pure One...").

The Procession: During the Great Doxology, the priests lift the Epitaphios onto their hands. On Mount Athos, the procession moves out of the Katholikon and circles the magnificent courtyard of the Monastery under candlelight and the continuous beating of the semantra.

The Entrance & The Blessing: Upon returning to the church, the Epitaphios is held high above the outer gate. All monks and pilgrims pass underneath the Epitaphios bowing, asking for the grace, protection, and intercession of the Virgin Mary.

4. Theological Essence: Empty Tomb & Hope of Life

This service is not a cry of despair, but a joyful farewell. The tomb of the Virgin Mary in Gethsemane remained empty on the third day, as Christ received Her holy body into heaven. The Epitaphios of the Theotokos reminds us that death has been defeated and that the Mother of God remains the unsleeping intercessor for us all.
