The Summer Pascha: Why the August Fast Fills the Soul with Hope
In the Orthodox Tradition, August is not merely the final month of summer, but the "Month of the Virgin Mary" par excellence.
The period from August 1st to August 14th is affectionately referred to by our people as the "Summer Pascha." It is a time of profound devotion, spiritual renewal, and sweet hope, during which the Supplicatory Canons (Paraklesis) are chanted every evening in our churches, lifting the worries, heartaches, and prayers of every believer to the Mother of Light.
The Maternal Embrace of the Theotokos: Why Do We Fast?
The Fast of the Dormition was established in the 7th century AD and is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. We do not fast because the Virgin Mary needs our self-denial, but because we need to cleanse our body and soul, preparing ourselves to welcome the great Feast of Her Dormition on August 15th.
Just as the Mother of the Lord surrendered Her holy soul with absolute trust into the hands of Her Son, so we too, through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, learn to entrust our lives to Divine Providence.
What the Holy Fathers Teach About True Fasting
Fasting in Orthodoxy is not merely a diet or physical abstinence from food. The Saints of our Church always emphasize its dual nature: physical and spiritual.
"Do not tell me I fasted so many days, but show me if you became gentle instead of violent, or merciful instead of harsh. Fasting is not merely abstinence from food, but estrangement from sins. Do you fast? Prove it through your deeds! If you see a poor person, show mercy. If you see an enemy, be reconciled. Let not only the mouth fast, but also the eye, the ear, the feet, the hands, and all members of our body."
"True fasting is estrangement from evil, temperance of the tongue, restraint of anger, abstinence from lusts, slander, falsehood, and perjury. The absence of these is true fasting."
"Fasting carries great spiritual power. When a person fasts out of love for Christ, God's grace covers them. But fasting must be done with humility, not pride—for the devil never eats, yet he remains a devil."
"Fasting is violence to nature, cutting off of pleasures, mortification of anger, removal of evil thoughts, and purity of prayer."
What Is Allowed and What Is Forbidden During the Dormition Fast (August 1–14)
The Fast of the Dormition is considered one of the strictest in our Church (comparable to Great Lent), yet it is brief and overflowing with spiritual grace.
What Is Forbidden (August 1–14):
Meat, poultry, and all meat products.
Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt, butter) and eggs.
Fish (with the exception of the Feast of the Transfiguration).
What Is Allowed & When:
Monday through Friday: A strict fast (dry eating / no oil) is observed. We abstain even from olive oil and wine. We consume legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, bread, olives, and halva.
Saturday & Sunday: Wine and oil are permitted (olive oil and wine are allowed, but not fish or dairy).
August 6th (The Transfiguration of the Savior): A great Feast of the Lord on which fish is permitted — fish, oil, and wine are allowed for all faithful, regardless of the day of the week it falls on!
Seafood (Shellfish/Mollusks): Squid, octopus, cuttlefish, and shrimp (which are bloodless) are permitted during fasting days according to Athonite monastic tradition.
Note: On August 15th, the day of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the fast is completely broken (all foods are allowed), unless August 15th happens to fall on a Wednesday or Friday, in which case fish only is allowed.
The Athonite Tradition: The Virgin Mary as the Abbess of Athos
On Mount Athos, rightly called the "Garden of the Virgin Mary," the Theotokos is venerated as the protectress, nourisher, and Patron Abbess of all Athonite Monks.
During the first two weeks of August, the slopes of Athos echo with the sweet chanting of the Paraklesis canons. The monks combine strict physical fasting with unceasing prayer of the heart ("Most Holy Theotokos, save us"), teaching us that true fasting is abstaining from passions, malice, and judgment.
