Sunday Before the Elevation: In the Shadow of the Holy Cross and the Consecration of the Resurrection

Today, Sunday, September 13, the Church calls us to a deeply devout preparation ahead of tomorrow's double joy and reverence: the Universal Elevation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross. Today, known as the Sunday Before the Elevation, holds a dual and particularly festive character, as it also coincides with the commemoration of the consecration of the All-Holy Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem.

The Readings of the Day

In today's Divine Liturgy, the sacred readings prepare our hearts to behold the mystery of the Cross not as a symbol of pain, but as a trophy of love and salvation:

The Apostolic Reading (Galatians 6:11-18): Apostle Paul proclaims with power the supreme confession: "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." He reminds us that what truly matters before God is not external rituals, but the "new creation" that is born within us when we bear the cross of love and patience.

The Gospel Reading (John 3:13-17): The Lord Himself reveals to us the meaning of His sacrifice, connecting it with theOld Testament and the bronze serpent lifted by Moses in the wilderness: "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." This is followed by the most shattering affirmation of divine love: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son..."

The Message for Our Lives

Today teaches us in the Church that the Cross is the heart of Orthodox life. Every difficulty, every "cross" of our daily routine, when faced with faith in the Crucified and Risen Lord, ceases to be a dead end and becomes a path leading to light and resurrection. As we prepare tonight for tomorrow's great feast, let us allow the light of the Precious Cross to illuminate our souls and grant us peace and strength.
