Saint Paraskevi the Victorious Martyr: The Light of the Eyes, the Confession of Faith, and the Grace of Athos

Today, July 26th, our Orthodox Church celebrates and honors the memory of one of the most beloved, popular, and miraculous Saints of Christianity, Saint Venerable Martyr Paraskevi the Victorious.

Saint Paraskevi is not merely a patron protector of the eyes and eyesight, but an enduring example of spiritual illumination, steadfast confession of faith, and angelic life in the world.

The Theological Anatomy of Her Life: From the Preparation of the Soul to the Victory of Martyrdom
Saint Paraskevi was born in Rome during the 2nd century AD to pious parents, Agathon and Politeia, who were childless. After fervent prayer, God granted them a daughter, whom they named Paraskevi because she was born on the sixth day of the week (Friday, which in Greek is Paraskevi, meaning "preparation").

Her name, however, acquired a deeper theological meaning: the Saint lived her entire life in continuous spiritual "preparation" for her meeting with her Bridegroom, Christ.

Equal-to-the-Apostles Ministry: After the death of her parents, she distributed all her wealth to the poor, was tonsured a nun, and began preaching the Gospel, leading countless pagans to the true faith.

The Miracle with Emperor Antoninus: When she was arrested for her faith, she was subjected to horrific tortures. When they threw her into a cauldron of boiling oil and pitch, the Saint remained unharmed. Emperor Antoninus, thinking the liquid was not hot, asked her to splash some on his face. As soon as the liquid touched his eyes, he was blinded. Saint Paraskevi, through her prayer, immediately healed the emperor's eyes, leading him to confess Christ.

The Crown of Martyrdom: Despite the miracles, subsequent persecutors were not deterred, and the Saint ultimately suffered death by beheading, surrendering her pure soul to the Lord.

Patristic Teaching: Physical and Spiritual Light

The Fathers of the Church analyze Saint Paraskevi's spiritual gift in two ways:

Healing of Physical Eyes: Saint Paraskevi is considered the paramount patron protector of ophthalmologists and those suffering from eye diseases. The healing she granted to Antoninus symbolizes divine economy: God uses His Saints to relieve human suffering.

Illumination of Spiritual Eyes: Saint Gregory Palamasand the Hesychast tradition emphasize that physical blindness is lesser than spiritual blindness. Saint Paraskevi not only heals physical eyes, but also opens the "eyes of the soul," granting discernment, purity of thoughts, and inner light.

Athonite Honor: The Garden of the Virgin Mary and Miraculous Relics

On Mount Athos, Saint Paraskevi is venerated with deep devotion. Portions of her holy, grace-flowing relics are kept as priceless treasures in many Holy Monasteries and Sketes of Athos (such as the Holy Monastery of Saint Paul, the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou, and the Holy Monastery of Koutloumousiou).

Athonite monks and pilgrims daily invoke her protection, while during the vigils of her feast day, sacred chanting fills the Garden of the Virgin Mary with prayerful grace.
