Saint Mary Magdalene & Saint Markella: The Flame of Faith and the Nobility of Holiness

Today, July 22nd, our Orthodox Church celebrates and honors two brilliant, sanctified female figures who stand as enduring examples of devotion, purity, and steadfast faith in Christ: Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene the Myrrh-bearer and Saint Virgin-Martyr Markella of Chios.

In an era when we seek spiritual support and inner peace, today's dual feast invites us to reflect on the depth of divine love and the strength of a soul entirely surrendered to the will of God.

Saint Mary Magdalene: The "Apostle to the Apostles" and the Incorrupt Hand of Athos
Saint Mary Magdalene was not merely a follower of the Lord. She was the woman freed from seven demons through divine grace, followed Christ all the way to Golgotha, stood beneath the Cross when the disciples had scattered, and was deemed worthy to be the very first to behold the Risen Lord.

For this reason, our Church calls her Equal-to-the-Apostles and "Apostle to the Apostles," as she brought the joyful news of the Resurrection to the Disciples.

The Sacred Connection with Mount Athos: In the Garden of the Virgin Mary, Saint Mary Magdalene is venerated with deep devotion. Preserved as an invaluable treasure at the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra is the Left Hand of the Saint. This wondrous relic remains incorrupt, warm (maintaining human body temperature!), and emits an unspeakable fragrance for centuries, performing countless miracles for those who approach with faith.

Saint Markella of Chios: The Lily of Purity and Self-Sacrifice

Concurrently, our Church honors the memory of Saint Markella, the patron protector of Chios. Saint Markella lived a life filled with prayer, fasting, and good deeds, but suffered a martyric death at the hands of her own father while defending her purity and faith in Christ to her final breath.

At the site of her martyrdom in Chios, holy water springs to this day, while her grace heals and comforts every suffering soul invoking her name.

Spiritual Lessons for Our Lives

What do these two Great Saints teach us today?

Repentance and Devotion: Mary Magdalene shows us that no matter what darkness a person experiences, communion with Christ transforms the soul and fills it with resurrection light.

Unshakable Faith in Adversity: Both Saints stood tall against pain, fear, and trials, teaching us spiritual courage.

The Power of Prayer: Unceasing prayer is the means that unites us with God's Grace and grants us peace
