The Forty Martyrs of Sebaste: "Bitter is the Winter, but Sweet is Paradise"

On March 9th, our Church honors the memory of the Holy Forty Martyrs, the brave soldiers who suffered martyrdom in the frozen lake of Sebaste in 320 AD. Their sacrifice remains a timeless symbol of unity, brotherhood, and unwavering faith in Christ.

The Grievous Martyrdom in the Frozen Lake

The Forty Martyrs were elite soldiers in Licinius's legion. When they refused to sacrifice to idols, confessing their faith in the true God, they were sentenced to a slow and agonizing death: they were forced to stand naked in the freezing waters of a lake throughout the night.

To tempt them, their persecutors placed a warm bath on the shore, promising salvation to anyone who yielded. One of the forty could not endure the cold and ran toward the bath, but as soon as he entered the warm water, he died instantly. The remaining thirty-nine continued to pray, saying to one another: "Bitter is the winter, but sweet is Paradise."

The Miracle and the Radiant Crowns

During the third hour of the night, a divine light illuminated the lake and warmed the Martyrs. Then, the guard watching over them saw forty radiant crowns descending from heaven, but one remained hovering above the place of the one who had deserted. Overwhelmed by the sight, the guard threw off his clothes, cried out "I too am a Christian!" and entered the lake, completing the sacred number of Forty.

The Great Feast at the Holy Monastery of Xiropotamou

On Mount Athos, the memory of the Forty Martyrs is celebrated with particular splendor, as the Holy Monastery of Xiropotamou is dedicated to them. The Monastery's Katholikon was built in their honor and is considered one of the oldest and most imposing on Athos.

Every year on March 9th (March 22nd according to the Old Calendar), Xiropotamou is "dressed" in festive glory. The vigil is profoundly moving, with Athonite fathers chanting the troparion of the Saints, while their presence is felt as a living shield protecting the Monastery and the entire Garden of the Virgin Mary.

Greek Tradition: "Sarantopites"

In the Greek countryside, the feast of the Forty Martyrs is linked to the awakening of spring. According to folk tradition, the day marks a turning point toward Easter.

The custom calls for housewives to bake traditional "Sarantopites" (Forty-pies) or "Sarantokouloura", which often feature 40 shapes or 40 ingredients (such as various nuts and herbs). In many regions, these pies are shared with neighbors to honor the souls of the Martyrs and to bring a "forty-fold" blessing to the home.
