Sunday of Orthodoxy: The Triumph of Light and the Restoration of Holy Icons

"Come and See": The Gospel Message
On this day, the Gospel reading transports us to the moment Philip invites Nathanael to meet the Messiah. When Nathanael expressed doubt, Philip replied with three words that constitute the essence of the Orthodox experience:

"Come and See" (Ἔρχου καὶ ἴδε).

This invitation is not accidental. Orthodoxy is not a theoretical teaching but an experiential truth. Just as icons call us to "behold" the face of God, the Church invites us to "see" the Truth through worship and spiritual life.

A Journey Through History: The End of Iconoclasm

The history of this feast takes us back to 843 AD in Constantinople. After a century of persecution,  Empress Theodora restored the icons to the churches. In the Synodikon of Orthodoxy read on this day, the triumphant words echo:
"As the Prophets saw, as the Apostles taught, as the Church has received... so we believe, so we speak, so we preach..."

Theological Depth: The Icon as Incarnation
The veneration of icons is based on the Gospel proclamation of the day: "You shall see heaven open." Through His Incarnation, Christ opened the heavens and became visible. The icon is the proof that God truly became man, so that man might be deified (Theosis).

March 1st, 2026: A Double Spiritual Joy
This year, the triumph of faith meets the memory of great Saints honored on March 1st:

Orthodoxos & Orthodoxy: Celebrating the feast of the day.

Theodora & Dora: Honoring the Empress, protector of the icons.

Eudokia: The Righteous Martyr from Samaria, a symbol of repentance.

Marcellus & Antoninus: Witnesses of the faith.
