The 4th Salutations of the Theotokos: The Unfading Bloom and the Unfathomable Wall

The Friday of the fourth week of Great Lent introduces us to the 4th Stance of the Salutations (Chairetismoi) (Oikoi T-Ω). As Great Lent advances toward its spiritual peak, the Church emphasizes the person of the All-Holy Theotokos not simply as a Mother, but as that mystical Candelabrum which illuminates the darkness of human existence.

Theological Depth: The Victory of Faith over Cold Logic

In the 4th Stance, the hymnographer focuses on a profound contrast: the inability of human reasoning to grasp the Mystery of the Incarnation.

“Eloquence is speechless before thee, O Theotokos, for we see thy multi-vocal orators rendered as silent as fish.”

Hidden here is a crucial spiritual lesson. The "orators," symbolizing worldly wisdom and purely rational thought, stand speechless before the Virgin. The Orthodox tradition teaches us that God is not "proven" in a laboratory, but is experienced within the heart. As Saint John Chrysostom notes, faith begins where the limits of logic end. The Theotokos became the "vessel of the Uncontainable" precisely because Her own logic submitted completely to the will of God.

“Let Us Estrange Ourselves from the World”: A Call to Spiritual Detachment

One of the most central verses of the 4th Stance is: “Witnessing a strange Birth, let us estrange ourselves from the world, transferring our mind to Heaven.”

This "estrangement" does not mean isolation from reality or a disdain for life. On the contrary, it is the invitation of Mount Athos to the modern person: to become a "stranger" to the passions, malice, envy, and that ceaseless material anxiety which suffocates the soul.

Saint Paisios the Athonite used to say: “When a person's mind is glued to earthly things, it is like a bird with muddy wings that cannot fly. The Panagia is the One who helps us shake off the mud and look toward Heaven.”

The 4th Stance hymns the Theotokos as:

A Wall of Virgins: She does not only protect physical purity but, more importantly, the chastity of the mind. In an age of "spiritual confusion," the Theotokos serves as an impregnable fortress where the believer finds refuge from temptational thoughts.

A Candelabrum: Just as a candle burns to give light, without losing its essence, the Theotokos accepted the "Fire of Divinity" without being consumed, thereby passing the Light of Christ to us who walk "in darkness."

Saint Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia emphasized that the Salutations service must not be performed out of "duty," but out of divine love (eros).

“When you say 'Hail' (Chaire) to the Panagia, you should feel as if you are offering Her a mystical rose. The soul then calms down, anxiety leaves, and the heart is filled with an unexplainable sweetness.” This sweetness is what transforms our home into a “church at home”, especially when accompanied by the fragrance of incense and the flickering light of the vigil lamp (kandili).
