The 3rd Stasis of the Salutations to the Theotokos: A Spiritual Ladder to Heaven

The Friday of the third week of Great Lent introduces us to the 3rd Stasis of the Salutations (Chairetismoι). As we approach the midpoint of the Orthodox Lenten journey, the Church calls us to turn our gaze toward the Theotokos, not merely as a historical figure, but as the living gate that reunites humanity with its Creator.

The Spiritual Lesson: Transformation of the Mind

In the 3rd Stasis, the hymn focuses on the bewilderment of the world's wise men before the Mystery of Virginity. As St. John Chrysostom states: "The Virgin is Heaven, for within Her dwelt the Sun of Righteousness." The moral lesson for us today is the necessity of spiritual humility. Logic retreats before faith, and the heart becomes a mirror reflecting the Divine Light.

Interpretation and Patristic References of the 3rd Stasis

The service of the Akathist Hymn includes verses that glorify the Theotokos as a guide and protectress:

"A new creation did the Creator reveal..."
Christ, coming into the world through the Virgin Mary, renews human nature. St. Paisios of Mount Athos used to say that the Panagia is the "Great Mother" who takes our old, weary existence and breathes into it new hope.

"Seeing a strange childbirth, let us estrange ourselves from the world..."
This is the most powerful exhortation of the 3rd Stasis. Witnessing the paradoxical miracle of the Nativity, we are called to become "strangers" (xenothomen) to the world, distancing ourselves from vain worldly anxieties and lifting our minds to heaven.

"He was wholly among those below, yet in no way absent from those above..."
A profound theological reference to God's presence among us. The Theotokos became the vessel that contained the Uncontainable (Achoretos), reminding us that God is present in every moment of our lives, provided we open the door of our soul to Him.
