Second Stanza of the Salutations to the Mother of God: The Miracle of Incarnation and Our Spiritual Journey

As Great Lent continues its sacred path, the second Friday of the Salutations (Chairetismi) invites us to stand in awe before the "strange wonder" of the Divine birth. If the First Stanza was the announcement of joy, the Second Stanza of the Akathist Hymn is the confirmation of faith: God becomes man, and the Virgin Mary becomes the "Container of the Uncontainable."

Spiritual Teachings: From Inquiry to Trust

In this second part, the Church presents the Magi and the Shepherds worshipping the Divine Infant. The moral lesson for the modern believer is the persistent search for Truth. Just as the Magi followed the star, we too are called to follow the light of our conscience amidst the spiritual challenges of Lent.

The Theotokos remains our constant support, the "star that reveals the Sun." As our beeswax candle melts before Her icon, let us reflect on how often we lose our orientation and ask the Mother of Light to lead us back to spiritual purity.

Theological Analysis of the Second Stanza

To delve deeper into the verses echoed tonight under the dim light of our churches, let us reflect on the most significant references of the service:

  • "The Shepherds, hearing the Angels singing..." The humble shepherds become witnesses of celestial glory. We are taught that a pure and humble heart is the one worthy to "hear" the voice of God. The Virgin is the "Ewe" who gave birth to the "Shepherd," uniting creation with the Creator.
  • "Beholding the God-ward Star, the Magi..." The wise men of the East use their knowledge (the star) to reach the Source of Wisdom. The Church reminds us that science and knowledge must always lead to the humble worship of God; otherwise, they remain void of meaning.
  • "The Magi, having become God-bearing Heralds..." Returning to their land, the Magi become the first apostles. The message for us is that our participation in the Salutations to the Virgin Mary does not end at the church exit but continues through our way of life in the world.
  • "Having shed the light of truth in Egypt..." The flight to Egypt symbolizes the victory of light over the darkness of idols. The Mother of God is hailed as the "haven for the voyagers of life," a calm harbor for every soul weary from the cares of this world.
