Historical References and Devotion to the Name of the Most Holy Theotokos

In the rich hagiographical and hymnographical tradition of our Church, the Most Holy Theotokos is venerated with countless titles, depending on the place of her manifestation or Her miracle. The fathers of Mount Athos see in Her person the ceaseless Intercession and Protection, who, just as she protected the shepherd among the myrtles, similarly shelters and guides the monks and pilgrims through their difficult spiritual struggles.

Patristic References and Spiritual Essence

The Holy Fathers of the Church, interpreting the theometoric miracles, emphasize that the myrtle plant is not a random symbol. In patristic thought, the myrtle, with its evergreen leaves and subtle fragrance, symbolizes the incorruptibility of the Theotokos' virginity and the eternal fragrance of the Holy Spirit that emerges from the heart of the praying person.

Saint Nicodemus the Athonite and other neptic fathers remind us that the Panagia "perfumes" with grace all those who invoke Her name with contrition and tears. Myrtidiotissa thus becomes the symbol of the soul that, although "paralyzed" by passions and sin, finds healing when it hears the inner voice of repentance and surrenders to the Grace of Her Son.
