Περιγραφη

Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Simon the Zealot and Apostle in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Simon was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ and brother of Judas Leviathan. His origin was from Cana in Galilee and for this reason is known as Simon the Canaanite. Simon was called a zealot because he belonged to the religious group of the Zealots or according to another version, because he zealously preached the word of the Gospel.

After the Ascension of Christ and Pentecost, Simon taught the word of the Lord in Persia. Then he went to Africa and finally to Britain. There he was arrested by the pagans and martyred on the cross. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on May 10 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Simon the Apostle

Third Tone

O Holy Apostle Simon, intercede to our merciful God, that He may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.
