Saint Sabbas was born in Moutalaska of Cappadocia in 439 AD. His parents were devout Christians and he decided at a very young age to dedicate himself to ascetic life. At the urging of Saint Efthymius, he went to a monastery in which the abbot was Saint Theoctistus. During his stay in the monastery, Sabbas was distinguished for his spiritual virtues as a result of which he received the miraculous gift.

Over time, the Saint gained a great reputation. He was sented twice as ambassador to Constantinople by the Patriarch of Jerusalem. He died peacefully in 534 AD. at the age of 94 offering great service to fellow human beings and the Church. He is considered a protector of cancer patients. Part of the Holy Relic of the Saint is located in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. His memory is commemorated by Orthodox Christian Church on December 5 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Sabbas the Sanctified

Plagal of the Fourth Tone

With the rivers of your tears, you have made the barren desert fertile. Through sighs of sorrow from deep within you, your labors have borne fruit a hundred-fold. By your miracles you have become a light, shining upon the world. O Savas, our Holy Father, pray to Christ our God, to save our souls.
