Περιγραφη

Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Pericles the Martyr in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Pericles was one of the Forty Martyrs who martyred in 250 AD. during the reign of Emperor Decius in Carthage, Africa. The Saints confessed their Christian faith and as a result they suffered horrible tortures and were eventually beheaded.

Among the Forty Martyrs were the African, Theodore, Maximus, Pompey and Terentius. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates their memory on April 10 of each year.

Apolytikion of the Forty Martyrs of Carthage

Plagal of the First Tone

All the powers of Heaven were awestruck and amazed at the achievements and deeds of the holy Martyrs of Christ; for contending well in mortal bodies clothed with flesh, they overcame the fleshless foe by the power of the Cross and invisibly subdued him. And now they pray to the Lord, that He might bestow His mercy on our souls.
