Περιγραφη

Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Nicephorus the Leper in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Nikiforos, known as Nikolaos Tzanakakis, was born in the village of Sirikari in Chania at the end of the 19th century. At the age of 13 he showed the first signs of leprosy and to avoid confinement in Spinalonga, he left for Alexandria of Egypt. The year 1914 AD went to Chios where he settled in the leprosarium of the island. There he met Saint Anthimos and with his blessings became a monk. In 1957 AD the Saint left Chios and went to the Anti-Leprosy Station of Saint Barbara in Athens. His health had deteriorated dramatically as his body parts had been deformed by leprosy.

At the age of 74, in the year 1964 AD, Father Nikiforos surrendered his soul to God. The Saint was distinguished for his ascetic life and the meekness of his character. The miracles he performed during his lifetime were many. The Orthodox Christian Church commemorates him on January 4 of each year.
