Περιγραφη

Μοunt Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Euphemia in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Euphemia was a great martyr of the Christian Church originating from Chalcedon. He lived and martyred during the time when the emperor of Rome was Diocletian who had started a persecution against Christians. Her parents grew up her according to the principles of the Christian faith, as a result of which she acquired great virtues.

Euphemia refused to attend a pagan feast held in the city of Chalcedon. She was imprisoned and subjected to horrific torture. But she remained steadfast in her faith and for this reason she was thrown to the wild beasts to kill her. Her memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Christian Church on September 16 of each year.

Apolytikion of Saint Euphemia the Great Martyr

Third Tone

O Euphemia, Christ's comely virgin, thou didst fill the Orthodox with gladness and didst cover with shame all the heretics; for at the holy Fourth Council in Chalcedon, thou didst confirm what the Fathers decreed aright. O all-glorious Great Martyr, do thou entreat Christ God that His great mercy may be granted unto us.
