The lighting of the pure beeswax candle in the Church symbolizes man's effort to communicate with God. It also symbolizes the purity of the soul of Christians and their daily struggle for the good and against temptations. The light of the candle is the Light of Christ calling us to strive zealously against darkness: «Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven» (Matthew 5:16).
