Saint Aristides was born in Athens in the 2nd century AD. and studied philosophy at the Philosophical School of Athens. He embraced the Christian faith and was a disciple of Saint Hierotheos and Saint Dionysius the Areopagite. In his famous Apology, he vigorously defended Christianity and the persecuted Christians of that time.

Aristides' actions provoked the wrath of the Roman emperor Hadrian who ordered his persecution. The Saint went to Rome to apologize and then was taken to Athens where he was martyred by hanging in the market of Athens in 120 AD. The Orthodox Christian Church celebrates his memory on September 13 of each year.
