Περιγραφη

Mount Athos weathered lithography (icon) of Saint Eugene of Trebizond in pine wood with carved decoration.

Saint Eugene lived in Trebizond during the reign of the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian. When the fierce persecution against the Christians began, the Saint hid in a cave in the forest to avoid arrest. Christ appears to the Saint and urges him to reveal his faith. Eugenius is finally arrested and led to Duke Lysias.

The Saint, devoted to his faith, refuses to sacrifice to idols, as a result of which he suffers horrible tortures and is finally crucified. In a miraculous way, Eugene is freed from the cross and healed from his wounds. Lysias, enraged, finally orders his beheading. His memory is commemorated by the Orthodox Christian Church on January 21 of each year.
